Shrimping’s in the blood, but none of my kids want it
Will and his old friend and deckhand, Robinson, spend “more time than worth thinking about” mending nets and preparing for tomorrow’s run. Talking helps pass time. “Shrimping’s a dying business,” Will says matter-of-factly. Robinson nods in agreement. Fuel cost, foreign catch and warming waters make life tough. “It’s got to be in the blood, and none of my kids want it,” Will says. “My daughter’s studying to be a doctor. Two of my sons have a landscape business. I understand that.” They fall quiet and return to mending nets. Maybe they’re thinking, as I am, that they may be the last generation to do this.
